Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir Lawal, has urged Nigerians not to support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2027 presidential election, accusing him of practicing ethnic politics.

Drivetvnews gathered that Lawal made the remarks during a telephone interview with The PUNCH while reacting to the controversy surrounding the African Democratic Congress (ADC) governorship ticket in Adamawa State.

He alleged that Atiku was attempting to replace the party’s governorship candidate, Suleiman Omar, with Tukur Modibbo, despite Omar emerging as the winner of the party’s primary election.

“Atiku Abubakar wants to replace Suleiman Omar as the governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress in Adamawa State with Alhaji Tukur Modibbo. He wants to replace Omar, who was elected at the primaries,” Lawal claimed.

The former SGF further accused Atiku of pursuing politics based on ethnic considerations and advised Nigerians against supporting his presidential ambition in 2027.

However, Atiku Abubakar dismissed the allegations, describing them as false and unfounded.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Phrank Shaibu, the former vice president denied having any involvement in an alleged plan to replace the ADC governorship candidate in Adamawa State.

According to the statement, Atiku never held any meeting, issued any directive, or participated in discussions aimed at changing the party’s duly nominated candidate.

The statement also accused those behind the claims of attempting to create unnecessary tension within the ADC because of the growing unity and momentum within the opposition party.

It urged party members and the public to disregard what it described as malicious propaganda, stressing that the ADC remains committed to due process, internal democracy, and decisions reached by its constitutionally recognised organs.
