The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned Yoruba Nollywood actress and producer, Temitope “Tope” Osoba, who passed away on the evening of August 4, 2026, at the age of 40 after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.
News of her passing was confirmed on Wednesday by actor and close friend Alesh Ola Sanni, who paid an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing the actress as a cherished friend whose death left him heartbroken and unable to sleep.
“Rest in peace, my dearest sister, Temitope Osoba. We shared so many wonderful memories together. Till we meet again,” he wrote.
Osoba’s battle with cancer began in late 2024 after she discovered a lump during a self-examination. She subsequently underwent several surgeries and publicly sought financial support to help cover the cost of her treatment.
Following months of medical care, doctors declared her cancer-free, and in August 2025 she made an inspiring return to the movie industry. She also became an advocate for breast cancer awareness, encouraging women to carry out regular self-examinations for early detection.
Throughout her career, Osoba earned widespread recognition for her performances in Yoruba-language films, including Ile Owo, Omo Iya Kan, and Gucci Girls. In addition to acting, she also worked as a film producer, contributing significantly to the growth of Yoruba Nollywood.
Her sudden passing, just months after what many believed was a successful recovery, has shocked colleagues, fans and the wider Nigerian entertainment industry, with many remembering her for her talent, resilience and dedication to filmmaking.
