The Bayelsa State Police Command has apprehended five individuals in connection with the death of a 38-year-old man who was accused of rape.
The deceased, identified as Samuel Ofiri, was found lifeless by the roadside along Kakatar Road in Otuoke, located in Ogbia Local Government Area of Bayelsa State.
According to the Commissioner of Police, Iyamah Daniel Edebor, officers from the Kolo Divisional Headquarters responded to a distress call on February 22, 2026, at about 3:30 p.m. Upon arrival, they discovered the victim’s body and subsequently transported it to the Federal Medical Centre in Otuoke.
Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident. They are Stanley Inemugha (21), Ipagaro Memidin (21), Kingsley Taribo (25), Boye Easter (22), all from Otakeme Community, and Preye Timbiri (40) from Otuoke Community.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased had been accused of raping a woman and was allegedly taken to a residence, where he was assaulted. The police stated that the injuries sustained during the assault led to his death.
The suspects are currently in custody and undergoing further investigation. Authorities have indicated that they will be charged accordingly.
The Commissioner of Police condemned mob justice and warned residents against taking the law into their own hands. He urged members of the public to report suspected criminal activities to law enforcement agencies rather than resorting to violence.
