Veteran entertainer and social commentator Charles Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has said he accepted his two daughters’ decisions to identify as lesbians because his priority is their happiness.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday Beats, Charly Boy addressed reactions to his public comments about his daughters and explained his approach to parenting adult children.
He said his younger daughter first told him about her sexuality years ago, while his older daughter came out more recently. According to him, he initially struggled with the revelation but eventually accepted their choices.
Charly Boy said he believes parents cannot control the personal decisions of their adult children, adding that his main concern is that his daughters should be happy and responsible for their own lives.
He explained that his parenting style has evolved over the years, particularly in dealing with younger generations. Rather than using force or commands, he said parents should advise their children and allow them to make their own decisions.
The entertainer added that he has tried to remain supportive and avoid unnecessary conflicts with his children, provided they are independent and do not take advantage of him.
Charly Boy also spoke about his relationship with former President Olusegun Obasanjo, describing him as both a close friend and a father figure.
He said their relationship developed naturally and that they regularly discuss a wide range of subjects, including religion and personal matters.
According to him, he sometimes turns to Obasanjo for advice when trying to resolve difficult issues, adding that their conversations can last several hours.
Charly Boy said he values the former president’s openness and sincerity and appreciates the fatherly role he has come to play in his life.
