Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, has explained why he chose to stand on an armoured vehicle while addressing residents during his condolence visit to the Angwan Rukuba community after a deadly attack that claimed about 30 lives on Palm Sunday.
During the visit on Monday, the governor spoke to grieving residents who had gathered in protest. His decision to stand inside the armoured vehicle drew widespread attention and reactions on social media.
In an interview with Channels Television, Mutfwang clarified that the move was simply to give him a better vantage point so he could be seen and heard clearly by the large crowd.
He noted that the elevated position made it easier to communicate effectively with residents, many of whom were distressed and demanding reassurance.
The governor also stated that the crowd itself showed no hostility toward him and even encouraged him to come closer, assuring him of their safety. However, security personnel advised caution and maintained protective measures during the visit.
Reacting to criticism online, Mutfwang accused some commentators of misrepresenting the situation by focusing only on a brief moment rather than the full context of his visit.
He stressed that most of his time in the community was spent interacting with residents, assessing the situation, and appealing for calm, adding that his presence was aimed at consoling victims and restoring order after the tragic incident.
