The Federal Government has issued a warning about possible flooding in parts of Nigeria, as heavy rainfall is expected to affect several areas between April 8 and April 12, 2026.
The alert was released by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment. According to the advisory, intense rainfall during the forecast period could trigger flooding in vulnerable communities.
States identified as being at risk include Ebonyi State, Anambra State, Ogun State, Taraba State, Cross River State, Benue State, Imo State, Delta State, Rivers State, and Abia State.
Specific locations highlighted include Afikpo and Nkalagu in Ebonyi; Atani, Odekpe, and Onitsha in Anambra; Ayetoro and Ilaro in Ogun; as well as several communities in Taraba such as Donga, Takum, and Serti. Other areas mentioned include Ikom and Itigidi in Cross River, Igumale in Benue, and parts of Imo, Delta, Rivers, and Abia states.
The ministry noted that these locations and surrounding areas are particularly vulnerable to heavy downpours that could result in flooding during the specified period.
This warning follows earlier advisories by relevant authorities, including the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which cautioned farmers against early planting due to misleading rainfall patterns earlier in the year. Authorities have also urged residents, especially those in flood-prone areas, to take precautionary measures as the rainy season approaches.
The government encouraged stakeholders and communities to remain alert and put safety measures in place to reduce potential damage and risks associated with flooding.
