The Oyo State Government has closed down a new generation church located in Golden Estate, Oluyole, Ibadan, due to noise pollution as the reason behind the action. The affected establishment is a branch of Christ Life Church, and the closure follows unsuccessful attempts by the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to mediate between the complainants, local residents, and the church management.Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, announced the decision on Friday, stating that the government had no choice but to seal the church premises to prevent potential tensions between residents and the church from escalating on Sundays. The ministry received numerous complaints from neighboring residents regarding the constant noise emanating from the church.Mogbonjubola explained that ministry officials visited the area on November 9, 2023, following complaints. During the visit, they measured the sound levels at various intervals, starting from praise and worship, with an average reading of 74 decibels. This exceeded the permissible limit of 65 decibels for residential areas during the daytime, as outlined in the Extant Environmental Regulations of 2023, Section 58, .Despite a resolution meeting held on November 29, 2023, in the ministry’s conference room, where the church was given the opportunity to address the issue by signing an undertaking letter, the church declined, citing the need for approval from its headquarters. The church promised to provide a response by December 4, 2023, but due to continued non-compliance with the regulations, the state government decided to seal the church.
