The National President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Alhaji Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, has described an efficient transportation system as a major driver of economic development.
Akinsanya, who also chairs the Board of Directors of Amalgamated Mega-City Transport Services Limited (AMTSL), made the statement during the inauguration of the first batch of 15 Ashok Leyland Falcon Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses acquired by the company in Lagos.
He explained that reliable transportation boosts productivity by helping workers reach their workplaces, enabling students to attend school, supporting business operations, facilitating the movement of goods to markets and connecting families with economic opportunities.
According to him, the inauguration marked a major milestone for AMTSL, which emerged from the Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) bidding process before being incorporated through a partnership between the NURTW and the Road Transport Employers Association of Nigeria (RTEAN).
He noted that acquiring the buses required years of planning, negotiations and consultations with financial institutions, manufacturers, government agencies and other stakeholders.
Akinsanya disclosed that the 15 buses represented the first batch of a planned fleet of 50, adding that the remaining 35 buses were expected to arrive before the end of December 2026.
He commended President Bola Tinubu’s Federal Government and the Lagos State Government under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu for their efforts to improve transportation. He also acknowledged the contributions of the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), Keystone Bank Plc and other partners to the project.
The NURTW president urged drivers operating the new buses to maintain discipline, patience, courtesy and professionalism, stressing that they represented both AMTSL and the organised transport sector.
He added that the inauguration marked a fresh chapter for the company, its employees and passengers, reaffirming AMTSL’s commitment to providing efficient, dependable and sustainable public transportation services across Lagos State.
