The Ondo State Police Command reported the arrest of a 17-year-old girl, identified as Wumi, for allegedly fatally stabbing her foster mother, Mrs. Funmilayo Adelayi.
The tragic incident took place at the deceased’s residence in Oda, Akure, last Wednesday. Mrs. Adelayi, an employee at the Ondo State Ministry of Finance, was discovered dead in her home three days later, with her body showing signs of decomposition.
According to a neighbor who preferred anonymity, Mrs. Adelayi was stabbed in the abdomen, and the assailant shut the doors to prevent her from seeking help, resulting in a futile struggle.
The knife used in the attack was found beside the victim, adding to the sorrow of the situation. The deceased’s body has been transferred to a hospital morgue in Akure.
Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, the Police Public Relations Officer, disclosed that the suspect’s family asserted she suffered from mental illness, though no medical report confirming this has been received by the command.
Investigations into the matter have commenced, with the suspect currently in custody. Mrs. Adelayi had been caring for Wumi since her childhood, highlighting the tragedy of the situation.
