An 11-year-old named Iremide Opeifa tragically drowned in a swimming pool at Grand Bank Link Hotels in Ogun State. The incident occurred on Sunday evening. Iremide had finished helping his mom at her shop before going to the hotel. Unfortunately, there was no lifeguard present to help him, and no medical care was provided by the hotel until his mother arrived. His family is upset because they feel the hotel didn’t do enough to keep him safe.
Kehinde Opeifa, a relative, shared that Iremide’s brother lost track of him, and later found him lifeless at the hotel. Despite their efforts, no hospital would accept Iremide, and he was declared dead upon arrival at the third hospital.
Another family member, Modupe Babafemi, claimed that the police didn’t take proper action after the incident was reported. They even pressured the mother to sign an affidavit not to take legal action.
The hotel’s lawyer, Israel Ozolua, mentioned that the hotel provided safety equipment like life jackets, but Iremide didn’t use them. However, the police are investigating, and the pool attendant is in custody.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the incident and stated that detectives visited the scene and took photos. The body was then taken to the hospital morgue.
