Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Okpala, the emeritus Archbishop of the Niger Province, and his driver have been missing since Friday morning, according to reports. Okpala, a native of Adazi Ani in Anaocha Local Government Area, disappeared while traveling to a burial in Umuchu, Aguata Local Government Area. Unfortunately, they never arrived, and all attempts to contact them have failed.

Former Anambra State governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has expressed deep concern over the disappearance. He condemned the deteriorating security situation in the country, highlighting how it forces citizens to live in constant fear and uncertainty. Obi urged the government to take immediate action to address the growing insecurity and protect the lives of Nigerians.

The church community has also been making efforts to locate the missing Archbishop and his driver. Despite these efforts, their whereabouts, along with their vehicle, remain unknown. On Saturday, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi, the Bishop of Nnewi Diocese, issued a call for prayers, urging members of the church to intercede for their safe return.

The Bishop’s statement read: “Good evening, Fathers in God. With a heavy heart, we wish to inform you that our beloved Father, Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Okpala (retired Archbishop of the Niger Province and Bishop of Nnewi), has been missing since Friday morning. He traveled with his driver to Umuchu but did not arrive at his destination. Neither he nor his driver, along with their vehicle, has been located. We humbly request your fervent prayers for their safety and swift return. The relevant authorities have been notified, and we trust in God for a positive resolution.”

In a statement on Monday, Obi called on security agencies to take urgent steps to locate the missing Archbishop and his driver. He expressed concern about the increasing number of unreported cases of insecurity across the country. Obi urged all levels of government to prioritize the safety and security of citizens, ensuring that Nigerians can live and travel without fear of violence.

He stated: “I am deeply troubled by the news of the disappearance of the emeritus Archbishop of the Niger Province, Most Rev. Prof. Godwin Okpala, and his driver. Reports indicate they went missing while traveling to a public event in Anambra State. This is yet another reflection of the alarming insecurity across our nation, where people live in constant fear and uncertainty.

“It is especially concerning how many cases of insecurity go unnoticed and unreported. Every Nigerian deserves to move freely and conduct their daily activities without fear of harm. Governments at all levels must ensure the protection of lives and property.

“I remain in prayer with the Okpala family and the entire Anglican Communion for the safe return of Archbishop Okpala and his driver. I also urge security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to resolve this situation and bring them back safely.”
