The Oyo State Police Command has arrested the estranged wife of the Ooni of Ife, Olori Naomi Silekunola, along with seven others, in connection with a stampede that occurred at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan. The incident happened during a family event organized by the Wings Foundation in collaboration with Agidigbo FM.
In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Adewale Osifeso, the arrests were made on December 19, 2024. Among those detained are Prophetess Naomi Silekunola (31), the main event sponsor, and the following individuals: Fasasi Abdulahi (56), the principal of Islamic High School; Genesis Christopher (24); Tanimowo Moruf (52); Anisolaja Olabode (42); Idowu Ibrahim (35); and Abiola Oluwatimilehin (25).
The statement reads in part:
“Following the stampede on Wednesday, December 18, 2024, at the Islamic High School in Basorun, Ibadan, during an event organized by the Wings Foundation and Agidigbo FM, the Oyo State Police Command has arrested eight individuals linked to the incident. Those in custody include the primary event sponsor, Prophetess Naomi Silekunola, and others: Fasasi Abdulahi, Genesis Christopher, Tanimowo Moruf, Anisolaja Olabode, Idowu Ibrahim, and Abiola Oluwatimilehin.”
The statement further revealed that 35 minors lost their lives in the tragedy, while six others sustained critical injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.
The case has been transferred to the Homicide Section of the State Criminal Investigation Department in Iyaganku, where the Deputy Commissioner of Police is leading the investigation. The authorities have assured the public that thorough inquiries are underway to determine the cause of the incident and hold those responsible accountable.
