Sunday Jackson, a farmer from Adamawa State, has been sentenced to death by hanging after being convicted of killing a Fulani herdsman in an incident many believe was an act of self-defense. The Supreme Court upheld the lower court’s decision, solidifying Jackson’s fate and prompting widespread calls for clemency from those who see the verdict as a miscarriage of justice.

The altercation took place while Jackson was working on his farm. A Fulani herdsman allegedly attacked him with a knife, inflicting injuries on his legs. In the struggle that followed, Jackson managed to overpower his attacker, took control of the knife, and fatally stabbed the herdsman. The prosecution acknowledged that the weapon originally belonged to the assailant, a detail that has fueled arguments in favor of Jackson’s self-defense claim.

Despite this context, the court ruled that Jackson should have fled after disarming his attacker instead of using the weapon against him. Consequently, he was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death by hanging. The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the ruling has sparked debate about the fairness of the judgment, with critics questioning whether sufficient consideration was given to the immediate danger Jackson faced.

“This is nothing short of persecution,” remarked a commentator on Arise Prime Time, where the case has drawn significant attention. “He was fighting for his life, yet he is being punished as if he were the aggressor. This verdict demands urgent reconsideration.”

Supporters have launched a campaign appealing to Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State, who has the authority to grant clemency. Activists and human rights advocates are calling for intervention, urging the governor to spare Jackson’s life. However, there has been no official response from the governor’s office regarding the growing public outcry.

This case has reignited discussions about self-defense laws in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where violent clashes between farmers and herders are increasingly common. For many, Jackson’s ordeal underscores the challenges of navigating a legal system that, some argue, disproportionately punishes the vulnerable.

As time runs out for Jackson, his fate now depends on Governor Fintiri and the collective efforts of those advocating for mercy. Whether their pleas will be heard remains uncertain, but the demand for justice continues to grow.
