A fatal road accident occurred along the Cele Expressway, inward Oshodi in Lagos State, resulting in the death of one person and injuries to five others.

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) confirmed that the crash happened on Saturday and involved a container-laden articulated truck, five commercial buses, and two private vehicles — a Toyota Camry and a Sienna bus.

According to LASTMA’s preliminary report, the truck was conveying two large containers when it experienced a sudden brake failure while moving at high speed. The driver lost control, causing the containers to detach and fall onto nearby vehicles, leading to severe damage and casualties.

A pedestrian reportedly died instantly, while five other individuals sustained various injuries. Among the victims was a commercial bus driver who suffered multiple fractures in his arm and leg.

Emergency responders from the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) were on the scene quickly and transported the injured victims to the General Hospital in Isolo for urgent medical attention.

Officials from LASTMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and community members, carried out rescue operations and cleared the accident scene to restore traffic flow. The Ijesha-Tedo Police Division also deployed officers to maintain peace and order at the location.

The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed sympathy to the family of the deceased and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He emphasised the need for regular maintenance and inspection of articulated vehicles, particularly those transporting heavy containers, to prevent similar tragedies.

He also advised motorists to obey traffic rules and ensure their vehicles are in good working condition.

“The safety of every road user remains our top priority. It is unacceptable to keep losing lives to preventable road accidents caused by vehicle faults and reckless driving,” Bakare-Oki stated.

He added that investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the accident and to hold those responsible accountable.
