President Bola Tinubu is set to welcome the triumphant Super Falcons to Abuja on Monday following their remarkable victory at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Nigerian women’s national team pulled off a stunning comeback to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in an electrifying final on Saturday night. The win not only secured Nigeria’s 10th WAFCON title but also saw the team dominate the individual awards.

Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Player of the Tournament, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie received the Best Goalkeeper award. Head Coach Justine Magudu was also honored as the tournament’s Best Coach.

Speaking with The Guardian on Sunday, Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Bukola Olopade—who was part of the Nigerian government’s delegation in Morocco—confirmed that the team would return home either later on Sunday or by Monday.

“I’m currently with the team as we finalize travel plans to Abuja,” Olopade said. “President Tinubu called the players after their win and assured them of a grand reception upon their return. That reception is expected between today and tomorrow.”

In a congratulatory message, President Tinubu lauded the Falcons’ resilience and fighting spirit, particularly after overcoming a two-goal deficit in front of a vocal Moroccan home crowd.

“Your hard work, perseverance, and dedication have made the country proud. This victory represents the unyielding spirit of Nigeria. The entire nation celebrates you,” he stated.

Reflecting on the tense final, Olopade recalled Morocco’s early lead—first by Ghizlane Chebbak in the 12th minute, followed by a second goal from Sanaa Mssoudy in the 24th. Despite the setback, he remained confident in the team’s ability to bounce back.

“I trusted Coach Magudu’s strategy completely. Even at 2-0 down, I assured fellow dignitaries, including the NIS Director General, Comrade Philip Shaibu, and Presidential Media Adviser, Chief Sunday Dare, that the team would recover,” Olopade explained.

He credited Ajibade’s increased tempo and critical passes as a turning point, alongside the coach’s impactful substitutions early in the second half.

“Esther Okoronkwo played a crucial role, and I must commend Folashade Florence Ijamilusi for her second goal, as well as Jennifer Echegini, who sealed the win in the 87th minute. The celebration went on into the night. I’m deeply grateful to everyone who supported the Super Falcons throughout the tournament,” he added.
