Renowned human rights advocate and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, has criticized the ongoing discourse around power rotation ahead of the 2027 general elections, labeling it a distraction from Nigeria’s critical issues.

Speaking during an appearance on Politics Today, a programme aired on Channels Television on Monday, Falana argued that debates about where political power should reside are diverting attention from more urgent national concerns.

“I will not be part of any campaign advocating for power to shift or stay in any region for four or eight years. That kind of discussion is a distraction,” he stated.

Falana emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges run deeper than regional power dynamics, pointing instead to widespread insecurity, hunger, and crumbling infrastructure as issues that require immediate attention.

He urged the political class to prioritize policies that would meaningfully improve citizens’ lives, rather than engaging in what he called power tussles among elites—discussions that, in his view, have little relevance to the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians.
