The Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant General Christopher Musa Oluyede (OFR), has commented on the confrontation between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, and Lieutenant Yerima of the Nigerian Navy, describing the officer’s conduct as “a reflection of true military discipline and composure.”
According to the Defence Chief, the Nigerian Defence Academy does not produce submissive or timid officers, noting that Yerima’s calm and controlled response during the exchange with the minister demonstrated professionalism, emotional intelligence, and courage — key values instilled in all military leaders.
“The officer’s ability to remain calm, firm, and respectful despite verbal provocation shows the discipline and leadership qualities expected of a Nigerian military officer,” he stated.
However, Oluyede condemned the minister’s tone during the altercation, stressing that it was inappropriate and unbecoming of a federal official to address a serving officer in such a manner.
“It is unfortunate and improper for a minister to use that kind of language toward an officer of the Armed Forces. Public officials are expected to demonstrate civility and restraint, especially when engaging with those who serve and protect the nation,” he added.
The Defence Chief further noted that the matter remains under his review and assured that necessary steps would be taken to maintain professionalism, discipline, and respect between civil authorities and the military.
