A police inspector attached to a multinational logistics company in Onne, Rivers State, has been taken into custody after an accidental discharge of his firearm left one colleague dead and another injured.
The incident happened around 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 18, 2026, as the officers were travelling from Life Camp to their residential quarters. The inspector involved, Victor Okus, serves under the supervision of the 19 Police Mobile Force (PMF) and was on duty with Hintex Logistics at the time.
According to information passed through the Port Harcourt Mine Unit Commander, DSP Chika Njoku, Inspector Okus reportedly handled his weapon carelessly while inside the vehicle with two officers from the 14 PMF unit based in Yola. The firearm discharged and struck both officers.
The injured officers were immediately rushed to Nobsams Hospital in Trans-Amadi for treatment. Medical officials later confirmed that one of them, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, did not survive the incident. The second officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, is currently receiving medical care.
Following the shooting, Inspector Okus was disarmed, placed on detention, and classified as a defaulter. He is being held at the Trans-Amadi Divisional Headquarters as investigations continue.
Police authorities have assured that a full inquiry is underway and that further details will be made public as the investigation progresses.
