The Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) has announced plans to seek intervention from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and FIFA following Senegal’s temporary walk-out during the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
In a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) account on Monday, the Moroccan football body said the Senegalese team left the pitch after a controversial refereeing decision that awarded Morocco a late penalty. According to the federation, the decision was reviewed and judged correct by football experts.
The FRMF stated that Senegal’s action disrupted the flow of the match and affected the performance of the players during a critical moment of the final. It added that the incident went against the principles of fair play expected at a major continental tournament.
The federation also used the opportunity to appreciate Moroccan supporters for their strong turnout and unwavering support throughout the competition. It further thanked organisers and stakeholders involved in hosting the tournament successfully.
The dramatic final, played on Sunday at the Stade Mohammed V in Rabat, took an unexpected turn late in regulation time. With the score still goalless, Senegal had a goal ruled out for offside before a VAR review awarded Morocco a penalty in stoppage time.
In protest, Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw led his players off the field, forcing security officials to intervene. After discussions, the team returned to continue the match. Morocco failed to convert the penalty, as Senegal goalkeeper Édouard Mendy made the save, pushing the game into extra time.
Senegal eventually secured victory when Pape Gueye scored early in extra time, sealing the AFCON 2025 title.
FIFA President Gianni Infantino has since criticised the disruption during the final, while CAF confirmed it is reviewing match footage and will forward its findings to the appropriate disciplinary bodies. Possible sanctions against Senegal could include fines or suspension, depending on the outcome of the investigation.
