Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that genotype compatibility was a major consideration for him before marrying his wife, Simi, after learning that he has the SS genotype.
Speaking on a recent episode of the One54 Podcast, the singer said he would not have proceeded with the marriage if Simi had an incompatible genotype.
Adekunle Gold explained that he wanted to avoid having children who could face serious health challenges associated with sickle cell disease.
He said checking Simi’s genotype was among the first things he did when their relationship began and that learning she was AA gave him confidence to proceed.
The singer has continued to raise awareness about sickle cell disease since publicly disclosing his SS genotype.
Adekunle Gold and Simi got married in January 2019 and have two children.
