Former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has called on President Bola Tinubu to apologise to Nigerians and resign, following conflicting accounts from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation (OAGF) and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) over the controversial Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council (PFIPC) accounts.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication, Phrank Shaibu, Atiku said the contradictory testimonies from both institutions have exposed what he described as a serious credibility crisis within the Tinubu administration.
According to Atiku, the CBN’s testimony before the House of Representatives directly contradicts the earlier position of the Office of the Accountant-General. While the OAGF reportedly denied authorising the opening of the PFIPC accounts and alleged that its approval was forged, the CBN maintained that the accounts were opened following directives from the Accountant-General and in line with due process.
He argued that both versions cannot be correct, insisting that the conflicting explanations have left the government entangled in its own contradictions.
Atiku questioned President Tinubu’s continued silence over the controversy, asking him to clarify which of the two accounts he believes. He warned that every delay in ordering an independent investigation only fuels public suspicion that the administration is more concerned with protecting its image than uncovering the truth.
He also criticised the Attorney-General of the Federation for remaining silent on the matter, saying the lack of action has further damaged public confidence in the government’s commitment to accountability.
The former vice president urged the National Assembly to summon both the Accountant-General of the Federation and the Governor of the Central Bank to appear jointly before its investigative committee under oath to provide Nigerians with a definitive explanation.
According to Atiku, the PFIPC controversy has evolved beyond questions about disputed bank accounts and has become a test of President Tinubu’s integrity and leadership. He argued that if the president cannot restore public confidence through a transparent and independent investigation that holds those responsible accountable, he has lost the moral authority to remain in office.
Atiku concluded by urging President Tinubu to apologise to Nigerians and step down from office.
