Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, has warned the South African authorities to take immediate action against attacks targeting Nigerian citizens in the country.
Drivetvnews gathered that Fani-Kayode said Nigeria’s patience was running out amid reported xenophobic attacks and the deaths of Nigerian nationals in South Africa.
His warning followed the reported killings of Nigerian cleric, Bishop Michael Taiwo Fakunle, and James Uchechukwu Nwankwo in Johannesburg.
Fakunle was reportedly killed at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg, on September 4, 2026. The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa said he was shot after two suspects allegedly gained access to his home.
Nwankwo was reportedly killed the following day in an incident involving officers of the South African Police Service in Johannesburg.
Reacting to the incidents, Fani-Kayode said he was deeply shocked by the death of Fakunle, adding that the cleric had reportedly received threats before his killing.
He also expressed concern over Nwankwo’s death and called on South Africa to address the circumstances surrounding the incidents and ensure the safety of Nigerians living in the country.
