The Onigbesi of Igbesi Land in Isin Local Government Area of Kwara State, Oba Moses Oyinloye Iwedunmoye I, has died days after being released from kidnappers.
The monarch was abducted on August 22, 2026, when armed men reportedly invaded Igbesi community. He regained his freedom five days later during a security operation around the Elerin/Ijomu-Oro axis.
His death was announced by the National President of Omo Ibile Igbomina, Bisi Fakayode, who expressed sadness over the development and prayed for the repose of the monarch’s soul.
One of the late monarch’s sons, Prince Olasunkanmi, also confirmed the death, saying his father passed away at a hospital in the early hours of Saturday following a brief illness after his release.
Oba Iwedunmoye was among three kidnapped victims rescued by security operatives during the operation.
The rescue operation followed information received at the Oro Police Station from a vigilante member who reported that one of his colleagues had sustained a gunshot injury while operating in the bush around Elerin/Ijomu-Oro.
The Divisional Police Officer subsequently led a combined team of police officers, military personnel and vigilantes to the area.
According to the police, suspected kidnappers opened fire after sighting the security team, resulting in an exchange of gunfire. One suspected kidnapper was reportedly killed, while other members of the gang fled into the surrounding area.
The security team later located and rescued the three victims, who were evacuated for medical attention.
