Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde has announced that the two surveillance aircraft acquired by his administration will become operational before the end of June as part of efforts to strengthen security across the state.
Speaking during a press briefing on Monday concerning the ongoing rescue mission following the abduction of teachers and students in Ahoro-Esinele, Oriire Local Government Area, the governor explained that the aircraft are currently at the Nigerian Air Force hangar in Lagos for final assembly.
According to him, the surveillance equipment has already arrived in Nigeria, while engineers from China are handling the reassembly process expected to last about two weeks.
Makinde stated that the aircraft were purchased to improve monitoring along Oyo State’s borders with Kwara State and the Republic of Benin, especially amid growing security concerns in border communities.
Addressing the school attack, the governor confirmed that seven students were abducted from Community Secondary School, while 18 pupils and seven teachers were kidnapped from First Baptist Primary and Nursery School. He also confirmed that one of the abducted teachers had been killed.
He described the rescue mission as delicate and ongoing, noting that security operatives were working under difficult conditions to secure the victims’ release.
Makinde urged the media and the public to avoid sensationalising the incident, stressing that human lives were involved and accurate information was necessary.
The governor further revealed that an operational coordination centre had been established at the Oyo State Police Headquarters to manage rescue updates and security operations.
He reassured residents that his administration remained committed to restoring safety and normalcy in the affected communities.
