The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has increased its petrol pump price by ₦35, raising it from ₦1,370 to ₦1,405 per litre amid controversy over the Federal Government’s proposed fuel discount.
Reports on Friday indicated that the new price had taken effect at NNPC filling stations across the country.
Some pump attendants, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the company announced the price adjustment on Thursday before implementing it on Friday.
NNPC has yet to publicly explain the reason for the increase.
The adjustment comes amid questions surrounding a proposed petrol discount announced by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele.
Oyedele had announced on Thursday a proposed fixed petrol gantry price of ₦1,375 per litre ahead of the January 16, 2027 presidential election.
With the latest adjustment, NNPC’s retail price is ₦30 higher than the proposed gantry price. However, the two prices apply at different stages of fuel distribution.
The development has raised further questions about how the proposed discount would work and its potential impact on petrol prices for consumers.
