The Oyo State Police Command has arrested six suspects allegedly involved in the possession, circulation and production of counterfeit euro notes in Ibadan.
Drivetvnews gathered that the suspects were apprehended after police operatives recovered 89 suspected fake €100 notes valued at €8,900, estimated at about N14.15 million.
The command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued in Ibadan on Thursday.
According to him, the operation started during a routine township patrol around the Labo-Wesley area of Ibadan at about 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Police officers reportedly stopped three men travelling on a motorcycle and searched them, leading to the discovery of the suspected counterfeit currency.
Olayinka said further investigation led the suspects to a location where they allegedly obtained the fake notes. A forensic search of the premises reportedly uncovered additional items suspected to have been used in producing the counterfeit currency.
Three other suspects were subsequently arrested, including the person allegedly responsible for producing the fake notes.
The six suspects remain in police custody and are assisting investigators. They are expected to be charged in court after the investigation is concluded.
The Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, CP Abimbola Olugbenga, commended the officers for their vigilance and professionalism during the operation.
