The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, has given the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to complete the payment of outstanding arrears under its 2026 agreement with the union or face indefinite strike action.

SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, announced the ultimatum during a press briefing in Abuja while presenting resolutions from the union’s National Executive Council meeting held at the Federal University, Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, over the weekend.

Ibrahim said the agreement reached between the Federal Government and SSANU was designed to address several outstanding issues affecting university workers, but its implementation had remained inconsistent across institutions.

He accused the government of paying the arrears irregularly and warned that the union would no longer tolerate delays in fulfilling the financial commitments contained in the agreement.

The union had issued a similar warning last Thursday, expressing concern over what it described as delays in implementing the 2026 FGN/SSANU Agreement.

SSANU said it would reject what it described as unnecessary delays, selective implementation, marginalisation or attempts to reduce the financial and non-financial provisions contained in the agreement.

According to Ibrahim, implementation has commenced in some universities but remains incomplete in others due to funding and administrative challenges.

He stressed that the agreement should produce tangible benefits for members rather than remain limited to promises made during negotiations.

“Agreements and NEC resolutions must translate into concrete action and measurable benefits for our members,” Ibrahim said.

The SSANU president also directed the union’s branches and zonal structures nationwide to closely monitor implementation, update membership records and document cases of non-compliance or alleged victimisation.

The branches were further instructed to submit reports on challenges affecting implementation to the union’s National Secretariat for appropriate action.

The 14-day deadline gives the Federal Government until the expiration of the period to address the outstanding payments and other concerns raised by SSANU before the union determines its next course of action.
