In the wake of the Gbagada kidnapping incident that gained traction on X (formerly Twitter) barely three weeks ago, a new wave of insecurity has surfaced in the Alapere area of Lagos State. ‘One Chance’ robbers have adopted a disturbing tactic, using aboniki, an intensely hot balm, on victims’ eyes during their criminal activities.Several victims shared harrowing accounts of their encounters with these robbers while receiving medical attention at a Lagos hospital. One anonymous victim, whose incident occurred on January 23, recounted the terrifying experience of being in a Sienna bus on her way to work from Alapere Estate. She described the unusual circumstances, including a less crowded bus and the unexpected change in route. The perpetrators, posing as fellow passengers, swiftly executed their plan to rob the victims. The victim disclosed that she was violently attacked, with one assailant using a hammer on her knee.During the ordeal, the robbers demanded valuables, including phones, passwords, and money. The victim narrated how they applied aboniki to her eyes, intensifying the trauma, and threatened to rape her if she didn’t comply. The robbers forcefully ejected the victims from the moving vehicle after seizing their belongings. The victim, having reported the incident at the Ogudu Police Station, was informed by a policewoman that such occurrences were unfortunately common in the Ogudu and Alapere area. Despite efforts by law enforcement to discourage commuters from boarding private cars, many remain reluctant to heed the warnings. The rise of these distressing incidents calls for heightened security measures and public awareness in affected areas.
