On Saturday, the “Justice for Sylvester Oromoni Jr.” group urged the Lagos State Government to expedite legal proceedings surrounding the tragic death of a Dowen College student. Coordinator Mr. Regent Youmor emphasized the need for timely justice during a Lagos press conference, expressing concerns that a delay might result in justice being denied. The press briefing aimed to announce the burial of the 12-year-old student, which occurred more than two years after his passing. Sylvester Oromoni Jr. died on Nov 30, 2021, at a private hospital in Warri, Delta, following alleged health complications at Dowen College, Lagos. The family asserted that he suffered injuries due to bullying by five senior students and criticized the school for insufficient medical attention.Contrary to the family’s claims, Dowen College maintained that the JS2 student was not bullied but sustained injuries during a football match with fellow students.Youmor, addressing the prevailing anger and anxiety surrounding the student’s death, underscored the urgency of serving justice promptly. He highlighted that the case was already before a competent court. The group also advised parents to cultivate healthy relationships with their children, particularly those in boarding schools. Such relationships, according to Youmor, foster open communication and help parents identify signs of bullying or coercion into unwanted groups. The ongoing coroner’s inquest into Sylvester Oromoni Jr.’s death at the Ikeja Magistrates Court commenced in January 2022. Magistrate Mikhail Kadiri, the Coroner, announced on Jan. 15, 2024, that the findings would be released on or before April 12.
