Students at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, have launched a protest after the tragic death of Ifeoluwa Ayodele, a first-year student of Agricultural Economics and Farm Management. The incident occurred after Ayodele, reportedly suffering from asthma, was brought to the university’s medical center for urgent care but unfortunately passed away.

Although details surrounding Ayodele’s death remain unclear, students expressed outrage over what they perceive as inadequate healthcare services at the university’s clinic, which they claim may have contributed to the student’s demise. They gathered in large numbers at the campus gate to voice their discontent with the medical center’s operations.

According to an anonymous student, Ayodele’s treatment was allegedly delayed because he did not have his identity card with him, a situation that exacerbated tensions leading up to the protest. This incident, along with previous similar occurrences reportedly due to negligence and substandard service delivery, fueled demands from students for a revamped healthcare system on campus.

Meshack Nwankwo, the university’s Students’ Union President, emphasized that the protest was primarily aimed at advocating for improved standards and services at the health center. While he refrained from attributing Ayodele’s death directly to medical negligence, Nwankwo cited accounts from witnesses and those who accompanied Ayodele to the hospital regarding the circumstances surrounding his tragic passing.

In response to the unrest, Vice Chancellor Olusola Kehinde addressed the protesters and provided an account of the incident, stating that Ayodele was already deceased upon arrival at the health center. He acknowledged the efforts made by staff to resuscitate the student but conceded that they were unsuccessful.

Despite conflicting narratives and emotional tensions, the university administration pledged to review and possibly enhance the medical services offered on campus to prevent future tragedies and restore student confidence in the healthcare facilities provided by the institution.
