Traditional religion adherents, represented by the International Council for Ifa Religion (ICIR), have strongly urged Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrashed Akanbi, to refrain from disparaging traditional religion, Yoruba tradition, and culture. They have also called upon the Osun State government, elders, and socio-cultural organizations to intervene and caution the monarch.
President of ICIR, Fayemi Fatunde Fakayode, expressed concern that the monarch’s remarks were fueling religious discord and causing embarrassment to other traditional leaders. Fakayode conveyed these sentiments during the inauguration of ICIR’s new executive committee on Saturday.
Furthermore, Fakayode used the platform to advocate for peace amidst the recent crisis in Iseyin involving the Muslim and Christian communities. He emphasized the need for those exacerbating religious tensions to cease their actions. He also admonished Oba Abdulrashed Akanbi against making derogatory remarks about Yoruba tradition, culture, and religion.
ICIR appealed to the government of Osun State, Yoruba socio-cultural organizations, and elders to intervene promptly and rein in Oba Abdulrashed before his statements escalate into larger issues.
“In the interest of peace, we urge adherents of all religions and traditions to coexist harmoniously and focus on our commonalities rather than differences,” Fakayode stated. “Consequently, we implore both Muslim and Christian factions in Iseyin to prioritize peace.”
