Ahmed Ayinla Fabiyi, a final-year student at Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijebu Odẹ, Ogun State, was tragically murdered by a suspected gang of cultists.
Fabiyi, who was studying in the History and Diplomatic Studies Department, was attacked by armed men while preparing to take his final exam on his birthday. The incident occurred during the scheduled exam period from 3pm to 6pm. Witnesses reported that the assailants initially seemed to be celebrating Fabiyi’s birthday before forcibly removing him from the exam hall to a secluded area near the institution’s technical workshop, where they brutally assaulted him with machetes.
Despite efforts to save him, including initial treatment at the school’s medical center and subsequent referrals to General Hospital, Ijebu Odẹ, and Babcock University Teaching Hospital, Fabiyi succumbed to his injuries on the way to the latter hospital.
Mrs. Odubela, the Public Relations Officer of TASUED, clarified that contrary to rumors, Fabiyi was not shot during the attack. She explained that security personnel were alerted after the assault began but arrived too late to prevent the severe injuries inflicted on Fabiyi.
Footage circulating on social media and accounts from fellow students corroborated the violent nature of the attack, confirming that Fabiyi was targeted by unidentified individuals during an ongoing examination session. He was also known as an active member of the Student Union Government (SUG) within the university.
Efforts to reach the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, for official comment on the incident were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
