President Bola Tinubu has stated that he has no regrets about his decision to remove the fuel subsidy upon assuming office as Nigeria’s President.

The President made this remark during a media briefing last Monday at 9 PM, where he addressed journalists and shared insights into his governance strategy. He discussed several pressing issues, including security, economic reforms, and the removal of the fuel subsidy.

Below are the key highlights of his address:

On Recent Tragic Events

President Tinubu expressed deep sympathy for the families of those who lost their lives or were injured in recent tragic events. He emphasized the need for empathy and solidarity among citizens.
“My condolences go to the families of the deceased. It is essential to continue helping one another,” he said, adding that he has been distributing relief materials in Bourdillon. He cautioned against insincere acts of charity, stating, “If you don’t have much to offer, don’t make a show of it.”

Security Challenges and Achievements

Addressing the security sector, President Tinubu highlighted the persistent challenges and the progress made under his administration. He expressed confidence in his government’s security strategies, particularly in addressing areas previously plagued by instability.
“I have faith in the security framework we have developed,” he said. Reflecting on past violence, he recalled suspending his campaign to visit crisis-affected areas like Maiduguri, Katsina, Kaduna, and Kogi.
“Today, you can travel on these roads, something that was unimaginable before. However, it only takes one incident to disrupt local systems,” he noted.

Fuel Subsidy Removal

The President reaffirmed his stance on the removal of the fuel subsidy, a decision that has sparked widespread debate. He emphasized the necessity of this move to ensure a brighter future for coming generations.
“We were squandering our future, neglecting investments, and failing to save for tomorrow,” he said. Tinubu described the decision as essential for building a sustainable economic system and securing long-term national growth.

Tax Reforms for Economic Modernization

President Tinubu stressed the importance of introducing new tax policies to modernize Nigeria’s economy and make it competitive on the global stage. He asserted that continuing outdated practices would hinder progress.
“The new tax reform is here to stay,” he declared. “We cannot continue doing things the same way if we want a robust economic system.”

Long-Term Benefits of Reforms

The President outlined the anticipated benefits of his administration’s reform agenda, urging citizens to remain patient as the nation navigates short-term challenges.
“Restructuring often brings temporary difficulties, but the long-term benefits will be worth it,” he assured. “This is not an instant fix for everyone, but the time for change has come.”

In his closing remarks, President Tinubu reaffirmed his commitment to addressing the country’s challenges and called on Nigerians to support his administration’s efforts toward building a better future.
