A 22-year-old woman, identified as Iyanu Adedeji, has been accused of fatally stabbing her husband, Funsho Jimoh, in the Gbonogun area of Abeokuta, the capital of Ogun State.
According to a security source, the couple, who had been married for eight years and had two children, got into an argument after Funsho allegedly accused Iyanu of infidelity. The disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical fight, during which Iyanu allegedly stabbed Funsho in the chest with a domestic knife.
The source explained, “During the altercation, Iyanu used a domestic knife to stab her husband in the chest. She then rushed him to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, where he was confirmed dead by the attending doctor.”
Speaking on the incident, Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Omolola Odutola, confirmed the arrest of the suspect. Odutola revealed that Iyanu reported herself to the local police station shortly after the incident, admitting to her involvement. She explained that she had taken her husband to the hospital upon realizing the severity of his injury.
Providing further details, Odutola said, “On December 30, 2024, at approximately 12:15 PM, Iyanu Adedeji, a resident of No. 3 Ifelodun Street, Unity Estate, Gbonogun, arrived at the police station with the body of her husband, 28-year-old Azeez Funsho Jimoh, in her vehicle. According to her account, the confrontation began after her husband accused her of having an extramarital affair. This led to a scuffle during which she allegedly stabbed him.”
Odutola further stated that police officers visited the scene of the incident and recovered the knife used in the attack. She noted that Iyanu is currently in custody while a preliminary investigation is ongoing, and the case will soon be handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a detailed probe.
In response to the tragic event, Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD, urged couples to adopt peaceful approaches to resolving conflicts in their relationships to prevent such unfortunate incidents.
