Pa Ayo Adebanjo, a respected leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural group, has passed away at the age of 96.

He died peacefully on the morning of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his home in Lekki, Lagos State.

His family confirmed his passing in an official statement released to the media.

“We announce with deep sorrow that Pa Ayo Adebanjo passed away peacefully at his Lekki residence in Lagos, Nigeria, on Friday, February 14, 2025, at the age of 96,” the statement read.

Adebanjo, a renowned lawyer and former organizing secretary of the Action Group, also served as the national leader of Afenifere. He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

“His unwavering dedication to truth, justice, and fairness will always be remembered. He remained steadfast in his fight for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria until his final moments,” the statement continued.

The family also mentioned that discussions are underway with Adebanjo’s associates, friends, and various interest groups in Nigeria and abroad to plan a fitting farewell. Further details about his funeral arrangements will be shared later.

Condolence registers have been placed at his home at 8 Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, and at his country residence in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.

The statement was signed on behalf of the family by Mrs. Ayotunde Atteh (née Ayo-Adebanjo), Mrs. Adeola Azeez (née Ayo-Adebanjo), and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo.
