On Sunday evening at Damagum Market in Yobe State, a tragic incident unfolded when an 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus deviated from its course and struck a group of pedestrians. The crash claimed five lives—including that of a pregnant woman—and left 19 people injured.

The bus, identified by its registration number KTG 283 XA, reportedly lost control while nearing the bustling market as traders and shoppers were wrapping up their daily activities. Eyewitnesses noted that those who died were not passengers but were pedestrians waiting at the roadside, likely preparing to cross.

Livinus Yilzoom, the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Yobe State, confirmed the details of the accident. He explained that in an attempt to avoid the pedestrians, the bus’s driver was unable to regain control, resulting in the vehicle colliding with the waiting crowd.

Following the distress call, the FRSC Unit Command at Dogon Kuka responded promptly by dispatching a crash investigation team to the scene. Emergency responders ensured that the injured and those who succumbed to their injuries were swiftly transported to Damagum General Hospital.

Initial investigations indicate that the accident was caused by speeding and a loss of control by the bus driver. The FRSC commander emphasized that the incident was preventable and reiterated the importance of adhering to traffic regulations, especially in areas with high pedestrian activity.
