The Delta State Police Command has taken into custody a suspect identified simply as Prince, accused of stabbing a fellow student named Peace within the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro.

The Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, revealed the incident in a video shared on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Friday. The footage, viewed by City Round, showed the suspect being paraded alongside evidence recovered at the scene, including a kitchen knife and a mobile phone.

According to Edafe, the victim, a 100-level student, was lured to the university auditorium by the suspect. Once there, she was allegedly stabbed twice—once in the neck and once in the chest.

“The items with me here—a mobile phone and a kitchen knife—were used in an attempted murder of a first-year student of the Delta State University of Science and Technology, Ozoro,” Edafe explained in the video.

He continued, “On June 14, the suspect invited Peace, whom he claimed was a friend, to the auditorium. During their meeting, he suddenly stabbed her twice in the neck and once in the chest. After the attack, he took her phone and called her father, claiming she had been kidnapped. He demanded a ransom of ₦2 million, later reducing the amount to ₦200,000 as an initial payment. Fortunately, the victim survived the attack.”

While still unconscious in the hospital, the victim managed to reveal the suspect’s identity, which led the school authorities to alert the police. The suspect was subsequently tracked down and arrested.

During his interrogation, Prince confessed to knowing the victim for about a month prior to the incident. He admitted that he had planned the attack with the intention of extorting money from her father.

“She didn’t offend me,” he said. “We were just talking about school and how we might be moved to Warri. Then she showed me something on her phone, and that’s when I stabbed her. I planned to have a friend in Lagos receive the ransom money in his account.”

Edafe confirmed that the suspect would face prosecution and assured the victim’s family that justice would be served.
