At least 18 people have lost their lives, while two others are battling for survival following a multiple-vehicle accident on the Dutse–Kiyawa Road in Jigawa State.
The crash, which occurred on Tuesday afternoon, involved two Golf 3 cars and a tipper truck. The tragedy comes only days after another fatal accident in the state on Christmas Day that claimed 11 lives and left several others injured.
Eyewitnesses said the accident happened at Danmasara Quarters when one of the vehicles lost control. Abdullahi Idris, a resident of the area, explained that a white Golf 3 veered off the road, struck a streetlight, and rammed into another Golf 3 approaching from the opposite direction. Moments later, a tipper truck crashed into both cars, worsening the impact.
Another witness, Muhammad Ibrahim, attributed the accident to excessive speed, noting that the force of the collision trapped several occupants inside the vehicles. He added that the scene was filled with cries for help as residents rushed to assist.
A third eyewitness, Fatima Hassan, said many of the victims were from Fake village in Kiyawa Local Government Area, describing the incident as devastating.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Jigawa State Police Command, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the crash occurred at about 12:20 pm along the Dutse–Kiyawa Road. According to him, 16 victims died instantly, while two others were pronounced dead at the hospital. Two survivors are currently receiving treatment in critical condition.
He disclosed that the vehicles involved bore registration numbers KYW 500 XA, RAN 836 XA, and BUU 289 XA, adding that preliminary findings showed the deceased included 10 males and eight females, mostly from Fake village.
The Commissioner of Police has expressed condolences to the families of the victims and assured them of the command’s support. Investigations have commenced to determine the exact cause of the accident, although speeding and reckless driving are suspected factors.
Police officers were also deployed to the scene to clear the wreckage and restore traffic flow, while motorists were advised to drive cautiously, especially on busy highways such as the Dutse–Kiyawa Road.
