The Delta State Police Command has detained an officer, ASP Nuhu Usman, over the death of a 28-year-old suspect, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun.

The incident occurred on Sunday after officers attached to the Area Command in Effurun acted on intelligence provided by members of the public. The suspect was reportedly intercepted while attempting to send a parcel believed to contain a Beretta pistol along with four rounds of ammunition.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, officers were dispatched to take the suspect into custody. However, the team leader allegedly opened fire in violation of Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s standard operating procedures, resulting in the suspect’s death.

The Commissioner of Police in Delta State, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, describing it as an unlawful killing. He immediately ordered the arrest of the officer involved and directed that he be transferred to the State Headquarters in Asaba.

The officer has since been queried and moved to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where he is expected to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for further action, including possible prosecution.

The police command reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on extrajudicial actions, emphasizing its commitment to professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights.

Authorities also extended condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be pursued. The public has been urged to remain calm as the investigation continues.
