Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore on Wednesday led a group of protesters to the Abuja office of MTN Nigeria, accusing telecommunications companies of exploiting subscribers.
The demonstration, tagged “Occupy MTN,” took place in Maitama, Abuja, with participants calling for cheaper and more reliable internet services. Protesters said the action marks the start of a broader nationwide campaign for improved telecom services.
Sowore alleged that network providers engage in unfair practices, including rapid data depletion and poor service quality, despite charging high subscription rates. He argued that customers are not getting value for their money, noting that data plans often do not last as expected.
He also extended criticism to other telecom operators, including Globacom, Airtel Nigeria, and 9mobile, accusing them of similar issues. In addition, he faulted the Nigerian Communications Commission for failing to adequately protect consumers.
According to the activist, unreliable internet services have negatively affected businesses and individuals, especially those who depend on digital platforms for their livelihoods.
Other speakers at the protest echoed similar concerns, highlighting the rising cost of data and the impact of poor connectivity on work, education, and online businesses. Some protesters warned that if no improvements are made, they may escalate their actions into a nationwide shutdown.
Security personnel were present at the scene to maintain order during the demonstration.
