A powerful windstorm has destroyed more than 1,000 houses across several communities in Niger State, leaving many families displaced and properties severely damaged.
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the incident, stating that the disaster affected communities in Mokwa and Bida local government areas.
According to the agency’s Director-General, Abdullahi Baba Arah, preliminary reports from Mokwa revealed extensive destruction in areas including Sawmill, Kpege Wayata, Kpege, Station Girigi, Efu Shaba Lile, Tifin Madza, Yafu, Etisheshi, Hakimi Aliyu and Nasfat.
Arah also disclosed that several wards in Bida Local Government Area, including Cheniyan, Nasarafu, Bariki, Kyari, Dokoza, Masaga A and Masaga B, were affected by the storm.
He added that similar incidents were recorded in Lavun, Katcha, Gbako and Mariga local government areas, where over 100 houses had earlier been damaged in Durgu Community under Bobi Ward.
NSEMA said assessment teams had been deployed to evaluate the level of destruction and determine the support required for affected residents.
