Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu, an aide to the Deputy Governor of Niger State, Comrade Yakubu Garba, has been killed after unknown assailants attacked him at his residence in the Maitumbi area of Minna.
Drivetvnews gathered that Dabawu, who also served as President of the Minna Emirate Youth Association, was reportedly attacked in the early hours of Thursday at his home located opposite the Maitumbi Police Station.
According to reports, the attackers gained access to the residence around 2:00 a.m. while the deceased was at home with his wife and teenage daughter.
A source said Dabawu noticed the living room door was open and went to check who was inside before he was allegedly stabbed in the chest by one of the attackers believed to have been hiding in the apartment.
The attackers were said to be wearing face masks, while one suspect reportedly dressed in a jalabiya during the operation.
Sources disclosed that the deceased had returned from Kuta in Shiroro Local Government Area shortly before the incident after participating in a primary election.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the killing, stating that officers responded after hearing cries for help in the Maitumbi area and found the victim in a pool of blood before rushing him to hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Police spokesperson Wasiu Abiodun said preliminary investigations revealed that masked assailants trespassed into the residence and attacked the victim, adding that efforts were ongoing to identify and arrest those responsible.
Meanwhile, Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba described the incident as painful and tragic while sympathising with the deceased’s family.
He also urged security agencies to ensure justice is served and appealed to residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
