The Kogi State Government has confirmed the abduction of 24 individuals from an orphanage in the state, with security agencies already rescuing a majority of the victims.
According to officials, 23 of those taken were students, while the remaining victim was the wife of the orphanage owner. The incident occurred late on April 26, 2026, when armed attackers invaded the facility and carried out the abduction.
Authorities disclosed that 15 victims have since been rescued following a swift response by security operatives, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining captives.
The State Commissioner for Information described the incident as unfortunate, noting that the facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of Schools, was operating without proper registration and was located in a remote area without notifying relevant authorities.
He explained that the lack of official oversight may have contributed to the vulnerability of the institution, raising concerns about the safety of similar establishments operating outside regulatory frameworks.
Security agencies, led by the Nigeria Police Force and supported by other units, have continued search and rescue operations in a bid to locate the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible.
The government also urged operators of orphanages, schools, and similar institutions to comply with registration requirements and coordinate with authorities to ensure adequate security measures.
Officials reaffirmed their commitment to protecting lives and property, assuring residents that all necessary steps are being taken to manage the situation and prevent future occurrences.
