The Plateau State Police Command has arrested nine individuals over an alleged plan to launch an attack on Angwan Rukuba community in Jos North Local Government Area.
The suspects were among several individuals presented by the Commissioner of Police, Bassey Ewah, at the state police headquarters for various offences. According to the police, the group is linked to the Sara Suka gang and was allegedly preparing a reprisal attack following the killing of their relatives during the recent Palm Sunday violence in the area, which left over 30 people dead.
Ewah disclosed that weapons were recovered from the suspects at the time of their arrest, adding that their actions were aimed at escalating tensions in the community.
In a separate development, the police also paraded a University of Jos student who was found in possession of a firearm and a human skull.
The command further announced the arrest of suspects connected to the killing of a 40-year-old gym instructor, Ebubechukwu Kelvin Ihionu. The victim was attacked shortly after the Angwan Rukuba incident, with his body later discovered near the University of Jos. Investigators traced his stolen phone to one suspect, whose confession led to the arrest of others allegedly involved in the crime.
Additionally, the police presented suspects linked to various offences, including sexual assault, defilement, and drug-related crimes.
Among them is a 19-year-old suspect accused of assaulting an infant, as well as another individual alleged to have repeatedly abused a minor. Both cases are currently under investigation, with medical examinations conducted on the victims.
The police commissioner assured that all suspects would be prosecuted upon the conclusion of investigations, while urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies.
