Child rights organisations have praised the conviction and death sentence handed to Apostle Ubong Bassey Etim for the murder of his 16-year-old daughter, Deborah Bassey, describing the ruling as a significant step in the fight against violence linked to witchcraft accusations.

Justice Blessing Egwu of the Cross River State High Court found the cleric guilty of killing Deborah, who was living with Down syndrome, after falsely accusing her of being a witch. The court sentenced him to death by hanging.

In a joint statement, Safe Child Africa, Advocacy for Alleged Witches (AFAW) and the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) said the judgement sends a clear message that crimes committed under the guise of witchcraft beliefs will not be tolerated.

The organisations described Deborah’s death as a tragic example of how harmful superstitious beliefs continue to expose vulnerable children, particularly those with disabilities, to abuse, torture and even death.

They commended the trial judge, the Nigeria Police Force, the Cross River State Attorney General, the Director of Public Prosecutions, prosecutors, investigators and expert witnesses for ensuring justice was served.

While welcoming the verdict, the groups called for stronger measures to prevent similar incidents. They urged governments to tighten the regulation of religious organisations, introduce mandatory child protection training for faith leaders and expand public awareness campaigns against witchcraft branding.

The organisations also advocated wider implementation of the Prevent Abuse of Children Today (PACT) campaign, saying it has proven effective in helping communities reject harmful witchcraft accusations through education and dialogue.

Safe Child Africa founder Gary Foxcroft said the judgement should mark a turning point in protecting vulnerable children, stressing that prevention remains the ultimate goal.

AFAW founder Leo Igwe said the ruling makes it clear that superstition cannot be used to justify murder, while BRCI co-founder James Ibor described the judgement as both justice for Deborah and a warning that perpetrators of violence against children will be held accountable.

The organisations reaffirmed their commitment to working with governments, communities and religious leaders to eliminate witchcraft-related child abuse and ensure every child enjoys the right to life, dignity and protection.
