A 53-year-old woman, Nelly Monday, has been sentenced to one month in prison for dumping refuse into a drainage channel in Lagos State.
Monday was arrested in the Meiran area of Lagos on September 9, 2026, after she was allegedly caught disposing of waste in a drain during rainfall.
The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) disclosed that she was arraigned before the Magistrate Court sitting at Bolade, Oshodi, where she pleaded guilty to the offence.
Following her plea, the court convicted and sentenced her to one month in prison.
LAWMA warned Lagos residents against indiscriminate waste disposal, particularly the dumping of refuse in drainage channels and other unauthorised locations.
The agency said it would continue working with relevant enforcement authorities to identify and sanction environmental offenders across the state.
LAWMA also urged residents to use approved waste disposal channels, noting that improper disposal can obstruct drainage systems and contribute to flooding.
