The Supreme Court has dismissed an appeal filed by Ganiyu Ajiboye Busari, who has been identified as the Oloja of Ago-Oja, in a long-running chieftaincy dispute involving the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade.

The ruling, delivered on September 28, 2026, upheld the earlier decision of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan Division, which restrained Busari from parading himself as Oloja.

According to the report, the Supreme Court dismissed the appeal in limine in a ruling delivered by Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba.

The dispute centres on the recognition and status of the Oloja title in Oyo, with the court decisions reportedly challenging the basis for Busari’s claim to the title.

The development has been described by supporters of the Alaafin as a victory for Oba Abimbola Owoade in the ongoing dispute over the title.

The report further claimed that the court’s decision could have implications for the coronation of the Oloja and other Alade Paali conducted under the administration of Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde.

It also stated that individuals affected by the judgment who continue to parade themselves as recognised Obas could potentially face contempt proceedings, depending on the specific orders and circumstances applicable to them.

The case has generated controversy within Oyo’s traditional institution, with the Alaafin’s camp previously seeking judicial intervention over the elevation of the disputed chieftaincy stool.

The Supreme Court’s latest decision now brings the appeal before it to an end.
