Delta State’s Commissioner of Police, Abaniwonda Olufemi, has verified the arrest of a 24-year-old woman implicated in the tragic act of infanticide. The suspect, Sofia Nkwor, hailing from Nsien, Ndokwa East LGA, committed the heinous act on April 28, 2024, in the vicinity of Araya community, Isoko South Local Government Area.
The revelation came to light after concerned children playing nearby discovered the abandoned one-and-a-half-year-old child floating in a well, prompting an immediate alert. The incident was reported to the Oleh Police Division, Isoko South LGA, leading to the swift apprehension of the suspect. Commissioner Olufemi affirmed that Sofia Nkwor is currently in custody, and investigations are underway.
In her confession, Sofia revealed that she disposed of the infant, Destiny, into the well on April 26, 2024. She cited abandonment by the father and her grandmother, with whom she resided, as contributing factors. Struggling to balance farming responsibilities with childcare, Sofia expressed remorse over her actions, acknowledging the absence of support during her ordeal.
“It was a moment of despair. I cherished the baby but felt overwhelmed and alone,” Sofia lamented during her interrogation. The intervention of local vigilantes culminated in her apprehension, leading to a realization of the gravity of her actions.
