The Department of State Services (DSS) has detained the leaders of a nationwide protest against poor governance that took place in Katsina State.
Local reports indicate that Kabir Shehu Yandaki and Habibu Ruma, the primary figures behind the “Struggle for Good Governance” protest, were summoned to the DSS office in Katsina and subsequently taken into custody.
In a similar vein, Mujittapha Usman, who reportedly led the protest in Malumfashi Local Government Area, was also apprehended by security forces.
According to friends of the detainees who spoke with local media, the DSS had initially contacted Yandaki and Ruma by phone earlier in the day, requesting them to visit their office to discuss the protest held the previous day. Upon their arrival at the Katsina DSS headquarters, they were detained and remain in custody as of the time of this report.
DriveTVNews had previously reported that the initially peaceful protest was disrupted by a chaotic mob, including many minors, who gathered in the state capital. The group was seen wielding sticks and leaves while chanting “Bamuyi Bamuyi” and causing damage to public property. The protesters burned an NSCDC patrol vehicle and set fire to the All Progressive Congress office in Dutsinma Local Government Area.
In response, the Katsina State Government imposed a 24-hour curfew on Dutsinma Local Government Area and established a curfew from 7 pm to 7 am for the remaining 34 local government areas of the state.
