Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stalwart, Segun Showunmi, criticized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for planning to borrow money to purchase Utility Sport Vehicles for legislators, valuing each at N160 million. Showunmi expressed his disapproval on X, stating that it is inappropriate to spend such a hefty amount on foreign SUVs during a period of economic scarcity. He urged opposition lawmakers to set an example by rejecting the luxury vehicles, emphasizing that there’s no law prohibiting them from doing so.
Meanwhile, Labour Party lawmakers in the National Assembly have contradicted the party’s National Chairman, Julius Abure, who advised them against accepting the expensive official vehicles. Abure had criticized the insensitivity of such spending given the current economic situation. However, some LP lawmakers defended the vehicles, citing their necessity for oversight functions. They pointed out the double standards, as state-level politicians enjoy more benefits without facing similar scrutiny.
